SGIL – CRIW – Wales based – 10 rolesLevel 3 in Creative and Digital Media – Film and TV apprenticeships

Want real experience working behind-the-scenes on TV and film productions? Ready to gain a Level 3 qualification in Creative and Digital Media AND to earn whilst you learn?

Sgil Cymru is thrilled to announce the launch of CRIW (Welsh for ‘Crew’), a game-changing Apprenticeship programme for 2021, open to those who are keen to work behind-the-scenes on exciting and major film and TV productions. Successful applicants will gain hands-on experience of roles on-set, right here in Wales.

This Apprenticeship programme has been created to reflect the dynamic, flexible nature of freelance work that is the heartbeat of the industry. Get ready to spend a year immersed in a variety of productions, meeting new people and working hard to complete new challenges, with a paid salary to support you as you learn. CRIW is your unique opportunity to develop the skills and gain the experience for a career in this industry.

A successful pilot scheme for CRIW ran in 2020 and saw Apprentices work on the set of hit Fox drama War of the Worlds, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Gabriel Byrne. Read more on how Tom, Josh and Jake got on here: Life as an Apprentice.

Wales is already established as one of the world’s leading locations for TV and film production and 2021 is set to be the biggest year yet. Current and former Sgil Cymru apprentices have and are currently working on productions such as His Dark Materials, Peaky Blinders and Casualty to Doctor Who, Pobol Y Cwm and Fleabag.

Job Description

The CRIW Apprenticeship scheme is a brilliant way to come into the industry since it shows people how the sector really works, as the apprentices will be moving from production to production, dependent on shooting schedules.

The role offers opportunities to gain essential experience of the process of producing content and offers wide-ranging networking opportunities that are valuable within the Media sector.

The crew on a film or TV production is made up of a variety of different departments, and can be entirely staffed by freelancers who move from production to production. As a CRIW Apprentice, you’ll be working alongside freelancers and could be in any department, including:

Assistant Directors – ensuring good communication on set between departments, working with cast and supporting artists

Production Office – providing logistical support by organising travel/accommodation, generating and distributing paperwork

Locations – making sure the location or studio is ready to shoot and maintained throughout the shoot day, and new locations prepared

There may also be opportunities in other departments depending on production requirements. Either way, you’ll also be making tea/coffee, talking on the phone/radio and will most likely spend most of the day on your feet. You might find yourself working for a number of weeks on one production, and then just a few days on another – just like a freelancer.

The role may involve working long and unsociable hours. You don’t need prior experience of working in production, but you definitely need to be motivated, enthusiastic and hard working.

Covid-19 working protocols will be in place to adhere to, per production.

Requirements

• Aged 16+

• Be based in Wales

• Have a keen interest in working in roles behind-the-scenes of film and TV productions

• Able to commit to 12 months commencing Monday 22 February 2021

• Access to internet for off-site learning when required

• A clean driving licence.

Existing experience in the industry is not necessary.

A limited number of vacancies require fluent Welsh speakers.

Salary

£12,500 PA.
